LASIK & PRK

What is LASIK?

LASIK [lā′sĭk] stands for la(ser-assisted in) si(tu) k(eratomileusis). It is commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction.

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery, which uses an excimer laser (ultraviolet laser) to reshape the curvature of the cornea to correct most common vision disorders, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

LASIK was first approved for use by the FDA in 1998 and is to this day one of the most common surgeries done in the US.

Around 700,000 LASIK surgeries are done annually in the US,

and the vast majority of patients are thrilled with their results. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have had LASIK: Kim Kardashian, Brooke Shields, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Courtney Cox, Cindy Crawford, LeBron James and Sir Richard Branson, to name a few.

1. Creation of Personalized Vision Profile

The first step in LASIK is creation of a computerized 3-D topographic map of the cornea using Pentacam Topography technology. This modern technology sends light waves through the eye to precisely detect and “map” aberrations affecting vision and provide detailed information of vision correction requirements to develop a personalized laser vision correction plan. Results generated are then encoded into our Excimer Laser for a more precise cornea reshaping. All of this is done in our clinic and then your data is analyzed by your surgeon to come up with a personalized vision plan for you.

WaveFront Technology produces:

☑ 25% more accurate identification and measurements of aberrations

☑ Personalized LASIK treatment that is unique to each patient

☑ Reduced thermal effects on the cornea

☑ Better surgical outcomes with much fewer risks and complications

☑ Reduced risk of post-LASIK complications, such as difficulty with night vision, glare and halos

2. Creation of a Flap

The second step in LASIK is creation of a flap in the cornea. The flap is then folded back, to reveal the middle section of the cornea. This micron-thin flap is created Blade-Free using the Femtosecond Laser. Dr. Kunal Merchant uses only the safer, quicker and more effective FemtoSecond Technology.

Blade-Free laser – The corneal flap is created using a femtosecond infrared laser that generates rapidly expanding clouds of free electrons and ionized molecules within the cornea. Once thousands of these bubbles expand, they form a plane at a desired depth and location within the cornea. The laser takes 10 seconds to create a corneal flap.

3. Reshaping of Cornea Using Excimer Laser

The final step in LASIK is the reshaping of the cornea. Once the middle layer of the cornea is exposed, an Excimer laser, which is an ultra-precise “cool” laser, is used to gently reshape the cornea to the desired curvature, based on the patient’s eyes WaveFront optimized data.  Finally, the flap is laid back down in position and takes hold within three minutes. No stitches are necessary to hold the flap in place. The procedure and recovery period is usually painless, and you regain functional vision in one day. Because of the quick recovery time, the patient can have both eyes done on the same day. The patient takes eye drops several times daily for one week following LASIK.
