EVO ICL
Vision correction has come a long way, and not every solution is right for every eye. The EVO ICL is one of the most exciting advancements in modern ophthalmology, offering a refractive option that goes beyond what laser surgery can do.
At Eye Care Associates of New Jersey, our Bergen County surgeons are pleased to offer the EVO ICL to patients seeking a flexible, high-performance option to gain greater visual freedom.
What is the EVO ICL?
The EVO ICL is an advanced vision correction option for adults who are tired of relying on glasses or contact lenses but want an alternative to laser eye surgery. ICL stands for Implantable Collamer Lens, and the EVO ICL is the latest generation of this FDA-approved technology designed to correct nearsightedness (myopia) with or without astigmatism.

Unlike LASIK or PRK, which reshape the cornea by removing tissue, the EVO ICL works by placing a soft, biocompatible lens inside the eye, just behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The lens is permanent, but it is also removable. This means your prescription is corrected without permanently altering the structure of your cornea, and the procedure is fully reversible should your vision needs ever change.
The EVO ICL is made from Collamer, a proprietary material that combines collagen with a soft polymer. Collamer is highly biocompatible, meaning the eye accepts it as a natural part of itself.
The lens also features built-in UV protection and a central port that allows the eye’s natural fluid to flow freely. This design eliminates the need for the laser procedure that older-generation ICLs once required, making the EVO ICL a more streamlined and patient-friendly procedure than ever before.

How Does the EVO ICL Procedure Work?
The EVO ICL procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes per eye.
Your EVO ICL surgeon will start by applying numbing drops to ensure you are comfortable throughout the surgery. In some cases, a mild sedative may be offered to help patients relax.
Next, your surgeon will create a small, self-sealing opening at the edge of the cornea and gently insert the folded lens, which then unfolds and positions itself behind the iris.
Most patients begin to notice clearer vision within hours of the procedure, with full visual recovery often happening within a few days. Because no corneal tissue is removed, dry eye symptoms tend to be far less common than with laser-based procedures.

Key Benefits of the EVO ICL
The EVO ICL has become one of the most exciting vision correction options available today, particularly for patients in Bergen County who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK or PRK. Benefits include:
- Sharp, high-definition vision that many patients describe as exceptional, with excellent night vision quality
- A great option for high prescriptions, correcting myopia from -3.0 to -20.0 diopters
- Great option for patients with thin corneas or dry eyes who have been turned away from LASIK
- No removal of corneal tissue, preserving the natural structure of the eye
- Quick recovery with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days
- Removable and upgradeable, so it adapts to your future eye care needs
- UV protection is built directly into the lens material
- No maintenance required once the lens is in place
Am I a Candidate for EVO ICL?
The ideal EVO ICL candidate is typically between 21 and 45 years of age, has a stable prescription, and is nearsighted with or without astigmatism.
Patients who have been told they are not candidates for LASIK because of thin corneas, dry eye disease, or very high prescriptions are often excellent candidates for the EVO ICL.
The only way to know for sure is through a comprehensive consultation. At Eye Care Associates of New Jersey, the evaluation includes detailed measurements of the eye’s anatomy, corneal mapping, and a thorough review of your medical and visual history. Our doctors will walk you through every option available so you can make a confident, informed decision about your vision.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery
Before surgery, patients attend a consultation where the eye is measured and mapped in detail. Contact lens wearers will be asked to switch to glasses for a period of time before measurements are taken to ensure accuracy.
On the day of surgery, the procedure itself is brief and comfortable. Patients are awake but relaxed, and the eye is fully numbed.
After surgery, patients are sent home with prescription eye drops to support healing and prevent infection. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for the next day, and additional visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress. Most patients return to work within one to three days and resume exercise within 1-2 weeks.
